ITEM 1: A Red, Red Rose by Robert Burns
O my Luve's like a red, red rose
That's newly sprung in June;
O my Luve's like the melodie
That's sweetly played in tune.
As fair art thou, my bonnie lass,
So deep in luve am I;
And I will luve thee still, my dear,
Till a' the seas gang dry:
Till a' the seas gang dry, my dear,
And the rocks melt wi' the sun;
I will luve thee still, my dear,
While the sands o' life shall run.
And fare thee weel, my only Luve,
And fare thee weel awhile!
And I will come again, my Luve,
Tho' it ware ten thousand mile.
That's newly sprung in June;
O my Luve's like the melodie
That's sweetly played in tune.
As fair art thou, my bonnie lass,
So deep in luve am I;
And I will luve thee still, my dear,
Till a' the seas gang dry:
Till a' the seas gang dry, my dear,
And the rocks melt wi' the sun;
I will luve thee still, my dear,
While the sands o' life shall run.
And fare thee weel, my only Luve,
And fare thee weel awhile!
And I will come again, my Luve,
Tho' it ware ten thousand mile.
Rhetorical devices:
-
Simile: love- red rose, love- melody
-
Overstatement: the sea gangs dry and the
rock melts
-
Rhyme: June- tune, I- dry, sun- run, a-
while- mile
-
Metaphor: sands of life: difficulties
Message:
The love is eternal.
ITEM 2: The Elephant Rope
As a man was passing
the elephants, he suddenly stopped, confused by the fact that these huge
creatures were being held by only a small rope tied to their front leg. No
chains, no cages. It was obvious that the elephants could, at anytime, break
away from their bonds but for some reason, they did not.
He saw a trainer nearby
and asked why these animals just stood there and made no attempt to get away.
“Well,” trainer said, “when they are very young and much smaller we use the
same size rope to tie them and, at that age, it’s enough to hold them. As they
grow up, they are conditioned to believe they cannot break away. They believe
the rope can still hold them, so they never try to break free.”
The man was amazed.
These animals could at any time break free from their bonds but because they
believed they couldn’t, they were stuck right where they were.
Rhetorical devices:
-
Metaphor:
elephant – sustainer
Message:
make anything happen for yourself
despite failure
Metaphor:
-
The
fossilized fish: degradation
-
Fish and lotus: environment
Message:
the environment is being degraded seriously by industrialization

I think your first item is a very beautiful poem about eternal, faithful love between a boy and a girl who got over obstacles to love and live together.
Trả lờiXóaAs you analysed, Robert Burns used quite a lot rhytoricle devices such as simile, overstatement, rhyme and metaphor.In addition, the author was very successful in using repetition device, for instance, "O my Luve's ", "till a' the seas gang dry", "And fare thee weel", "I will luve thee still, my dear" to describe their wonderful love.
