Vũ Thị Hải

Entry 1_ Vũ Thị Hải
                                    Item 1: English Poem
[Sonnets from the Portuguese
Elizabeth Barrett Browning
(1806-1861)]
How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.
I love thee to the depth and breadth and height
My soul can reach, when feeling out of sight
For the ends of Being and ideal Grace.
I love thee to the level of everyday's
Most quiet need, by sun and candlelight.
I love thee freely, as men strive for Right;
I love thee purely, as they turn from Praise.
I love thee with the passion put to use
In my old griefs, and with my childhood's faith.
I love thee with a love I seemed to lose
With my lost saints,--I love thee with the breath,
Smiles, tears, of all my life!--and, if God choose,
I shall but love thee better after death.
Rhetorical devices:
+: Rhyme: height-sight-candlelight-Right
                 Praise-faith
                 Breath-death
                 Freely-purely
+: Repetition: the phrase “I love thee” repeated 9 times
+: Simile:
love as quite need of sun and candlelight
Love as men strive for Right
Love as they turn from Praise
+: overstatement: “I shall but live thee better after death”
Message: my love for you is so deep and great that will exist permanently.

                                                    Item 2: Vietnamese folk-song

Rhetorical devices:
Simile: lấy chồng = chim vào lồng = cá cắn câu
Rhetorical question: “cá cắn câu biết đâu mà gỡ?
Chim vào lồng biết thuở nào ra?”
Message:
Tragedy of marriage that when you get married with a person not because of love you will feel that your life lacks of freedom and like a prison. In addition, this folk-song is also a complaint the guy who she loves could not bring happiness as well as freedom to her.

                                                    Item 3: cartoon

Rhetorical devices:
+: Bathos: there is a picture with a sexy singer wearing scanty clothes and singing the song with words “ hát giữa mọi người không ngại ngần”
Message: criticize the style of most of V-pop singers that they learn from foreign singers, specially Western singers that they dress too short and scanty that is against Easter’s tradition in general and Vietnamese’s tradition and culture in particular.
